Have you ever noticed that alot of the musicians in our world who were at least around and performing in the 1970s probably wore jumpsuits during this time? Some definitely looked drop dead gorgeous in that stuff, others did not. I really have to wonder what the big fascination was with it, why almost every musician had to wear one. Here are some musicians who may have worn one at one time or another.
Jumpsuit: 1 piece outfit that joins the top and bottom together. First associated with the military and with certain sports. In the 1970s, some jumpsuits had a futuristic look to them because they were popularized by actors and characters on shows like Star Trek, The Jetsons, or other sci-fi stuff.
-You have to have a certain body type for this stuff, and that is skinny. These clothes look sexy on the right person, but if you have a little body weight, may not be for you!
-They were most popular in the last 5 years of the 1970s, 1975-1980. They came in a variety of styles. The ones made for dressing up came in shiny, silky fabric with a few baubles or a fancy belt worn around the waist, or like Mick Jagger did, wear a scarf around your waist.
-Most of them might have buttoned up the front or had a zipper and if you were a guy, be careful not to get anything caught in the zipper if you catch my drift. Daytime jumpsuits were not as fancy as ones worn during the evening. Daytime ones were usually made of denim, cotton or some sort of stretchy material, such as spandex or lycra and could be found in solid colors or prints.
-They were mostly popular in the 1970s discotheques or disco nightclubs. And platform shoes mostly accompanied these and the idea was the funkier the better. They were often tight, fitting to every curve on someone's body, and they usually were white and tight, to show off the dancing of the music.
-Some of the people who popularized them even further include The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Jackson 5, John Travolta.
-Musicians and celebrities outside of disco caught on to them as well. Elvis Presley owned hundreds, and it was not odd to see them on other singers like Freddie Mercury or Mick Jagger.
-There was generally a certain body type for this clothing. If you had chubby legs or a little extra tummy, they did not look good on you. You had to be skinny or skinny and somewhat muscular to make them look good. And another little idea behind it was the more it was washed, the more it shrank, so it looked even more incredibly sexy on certain people.
Some of the more well known wearers of the 1 piece bodysuit:
Alice Cooper
Mick Jagger. He was one of the most famous wearers of the 1 piece bodysuit. But then by the 1980s, he was in to brightly colored spandex and brightly colored clothing. As seen in some of the photos, he often paired them with scarves around his waist, a jacket of some sort, etc.
