From Hell

From Hell

-2001 American crime drama horror mystery film directed by the Hughes Brothers
-Adaptation of the comic book series of the same name by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell about the Jack the Ripper murders.

Did You Know?
-To play the lead role of Fred Abberline, Jude Law, Brad Pitt, Daniel Day-Lewis auditioned before the role eventually went to Johnny Depp
-Great care was taken to accurately reproduce the Whitechapel neighborhood, the sites of the actual "Ripper" murders and the wounds upon the victims. Pictures from 1888 were used as references
-Pictures from the real Jack the Ripper murders are on the wall in the police station. This was done to give the cast an edgier feel after seeing the real life victims.
-According to John Douglas, who invented criminal profiling, the real life murders were done by someone with a disorganized, paranoid personality, not a calculating one like in the movie
-Johnny Depp's character was based on a real person. Inspector Frederick Abberline of Scotland Yard headed the investigation in the East End. The real Fred Abberline was not a dope addict or psychic, and did not die following the investigation. He died in 1929 at age 86. Robbie Coltrane's character is based loosely on Essex born George Godley, who at the time of the Ripper murders, was a sergeant at Bethnal Green

Plot
-In 1888, Mary Kelly(Heather Graham) and her small group of London prostitutes, who all are friends, go through the daily drama of trying to earn money, their only consolation being that things can't get worse. Unfortunately, the situation does get worse. Their friend Ann Crook(Joanna Page) is kidnapped and they are drawn into a conspiracy with links high up, links they could not imagine. The kidnapping is soon followed by the gruesome murder of another woman, Martha Tabram(Samantha Spiro), and it becomes obvious that they are being hunted down, one by one, as various prostitutes are killed and mutilated post mortem.

-By Whitechapel standards, these murders attract the attention of Police Inspector Frederick Abberline(Johnny Depp), a brilliant, troubled man who has the uncanny ability to see and do his police work through "visions". His investigations reveal that the murders, while gruesome, imply that someone highly educated is behind it due to the almost surgical perfection of the cuts. Ann is discovered a few days later in an asylum, after being lobotomized after officials and doctors found her to be insane. It's said that this was done to silence her. Abberline consults a physician to the Royal Family named Sir William Gull(Ian Holm), drawing on his experience and knowledge of medicine. These discoveries, paired with his bosses holding back the investigation, point to something far darker and possibly an organized conspiracy. Abberline becomes deeply involved, possibly too deeply, and it takes a toll on him when he and Mary begin to fall in love.

-Abberline deduces that the Masonic influence is present in the crimes, since they are highly educated and might be able to make surgical cuts and have the knowledge of medicine. His superior, a high ranking Freemason, then makes a direct intervention and suspends Abberline. It's then revealed that Gull is the killer. He has been killing the witnesses to hide Albert Sickert(Max Dexter)'s forbidden Catholic marriage to Crook, who had a baby girl, Alice, with him. Sickert is actually Prince Edward, the grandson of the reigning Queen Victoria(Liz Moscrop), and therefore Alice is the heir to the British throne. Gull himself is a Freemason and his sinister behavior lends a clue into his murderous mind. Rather than risk the embarrassment and charge Gull, The Freemasons lobotomize Gull to protect the Royal Family from the scandal that might arise. Gull states that he has no equal among men and is rendered an invalid just as Ann had become. Mary Kelly doesn't die; Gull mistook another woman with similar hair color named Ada, who was from France, who happened to be the lover of another prostitute named Liz Stride(Susan Lynch). Ada was actually from Belgium and he murdered her instead of Mary Kelly. Now Mary lives with Alice in a cottage on a cliff by the sea, Abberline is found dead of an opium overdose, knowing he can't ever see Mary again without putting her in danger.

The Sopranos

For some reason, I like watching this show. Man, I've been hangin' around my mom and stepdad way too long, they both watch this. They had this exact same picture down in their basement, but they stopped watching the show because they said they "outgrew" it, and now, it's hanging in my room, weird.

The Sopranos

-1999-2007
-American TV drama that premiered in 1999
-Revolves around the New Jersey-based fictional Italian American mobster Tony Soprano(James Gandolfini) and the problems he faces as he tries to balance the life of the Mafia and homelife.
-The show also features his Mafia associates in roles and storylines, most noted his wife Carmela(Edie Falco), cousin and protege Christopher Moltisanti(Michael Imperioli). Tony talks about these problems to a shrink named Dr. Jennifer Melfi(Lorraine Bracco)
-Premiered on Jan. 10, 1999

-This show is considered a staple of 2000s American pop culture, and has spawned a video game, been the topic of parodies, controversy and merchandise.

-Many of the actors on the show were virtual unknowns but have gone on to successful careers because of this show, such as Michael Imperioli, who has appeared on Law and Order as Det. Nick Falco and most recently, as Det. Len Fenerman in The Lovely Bones.
-This show is partly inspired by the DeCavalcante Family, who rose to prominence in the New Jersey area where Chase grew up. Apparenty Chase was inspired by gangster flicks like The Untouchables, and was inspired by the Mafia and organized crime from a very early age.

Casting
-Many of the actors on the show are Italian American just like their characters. Many of them had appeared together in films and TV before joining the cast. The show shares a total of 27 actors with the 1990 Martin Scorsese movie Goodfellas, including main cast Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico. 8 of the Sopranos actors have also appeared in the 1999 comedy Mickey Blue Eyes.

-Michael Imperioli, according to TV producer David Chase, who is also Italian American because his family name is DeCesare, said that Imperioli beat out other actors who auditioned. James Gandolfini auditioned after someone seen the performance he gave in True Romance. Lorraine Bracco was asked to play Carmela Soprano after being seen playing Karen Hill in Goodfellas. So she got the role of highly educated psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi, she said it would be a challenge for her. Tony Sirico, who does actually have a criminal background, signed on to play Paulie Walnuts, as long as his character was not a "rat". Springsteen guitarist "Little Steven" Van Zandt(known as part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band) got to audition for the role of mob consigliere Silvio Dante. He was asked to audition after being seen performing at the 1997 Rocka and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Van Zandt had never acted before, and his real life spouse Maureen was cast as Silvio's wife, Gabriella.
-Several well known actors also appeared in a few episodes, like Charles S. Dutton, Ken Leung, Lauren Bacall, Tim Kang, Burt Young, Annette Bening.
Music
-The show is known for it's use of previously recorded songs. Steven Van Zandt also helped out with music too, considering he's a musician.
-The show's opening theme, "Woke Up This Morning" was written by, remixed and performed by British band Alabama 3. And throughout episodes, songs may be played multiple times, such as "Living on a Thin Line" by The Kinks, is season 3, episode "University", "Glad Tidings" by Van Morrison in season 5 finale "All Due Respect".

Sets, Locations
-The majority of the filming takes place in New Jersey. The other places, like the Soprano residence, alot of interior shots, the back room of the strip club The Bada Bing! and Dr. Melfi's office- are all filmed at Silvercup Studios in New York City
-The Italian deli, a frequent hangout of the mobsters, was in the pilot, known as Centanni's Meat Market, was an actual butcher shop in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The studio leased a building with a store front in Kearny, New Jersey and this served as the deli store, Satriale's. The building was demolished after the series ended.
-The Bada Bing!, a fictional strip club owned and operated by Silvo Dante, is an actual strip club on Route 17, in Lodi, New Jersey. Exteriors and interiors, except for the back room, were shot on location. The club is really called Satin Dolls. The owner of the real club, Mark Kamine, said that they could film on location as long as shooting did not "conflict with his business time."
-The Italian restaurant Vesuvio's, was filmed at a restaurant called Manolo's in Elizabeth.

Plot
-The game opens in Istanbul, Turkey, in a shootout between a gang and the Istanbul police. Jericho is seen shooting at the cops with his sawed off shotgun, and Tanner is seen with Jones shooting some of the gang. Jericho hides and starts to reload his gun, in which Tanner takes advantage of to run to his position. Just as Jericho loads the gun, Tanner runs after him and we see him slamming the car door and it cuts to a scene blackout. Later on, the scene goes to a hospital where Tanner and Jericho are injured and the doctors examining one of them, and later shows one of them flatlining

-The game goes back 6 months before in Miami, where undercover FBI agent Tanner(Michael Madsen), along with partner Tobias Jones(Ving Rhames), are infiltrating a crime ring known as South Beach, which specializes in stolen cars. A woman named Calita(Michelle Rodriguez) runs the ring, and there is a weapons specialist named Lomaz, and Bad Hand/ Tanner convinces them to give him a shot to work for them. He is accepted by the group and he begins to do odd jobs for them, in hopes of achieving a record of 40 stolen high performance cars

-South Beach ends up having a falling out with a local crime lord named "The Gator", so Calita sends Tanner after him. He is told to blow up The Gator's superyacht docked by an island in south Miami. The problem ends when Tanner shoots him in the sea and Calita and sends him and Lomaz to kill the Gator, thinking he is dead

-Later on, South Beach moves their stuff to Nice, France and Tanner relocates there too. Interpol agents Henri Vauban and Didier Dubois have their own plan to take down the ring and are at odds with Tanner. He decides to work the job his own way, which in several cases, leads him to conflict with the Interpol agents. After a few jobs, the Interpol agents mistakenly blow up Tanner's cover and a man shows up to Tanner, revealed to be Jericho(Mickey Rourke). He manages to escape him and blast his way out of Nice, along with Jones

-In Istanbul, Turkey, Tanner is now working as a rogue agent. However, Tanner and Jones are able to find a number of contacts who lead them to the crime ring and it's real leader, Jericho, who betrays and kills Solomon Caine, his former boss. Jericho appeared at a warehouse while Didier Dubois was using a laptop belonging to Calita, first stunning Tanner, who is confronted and ends up shooting Dubois

-Later, Dubois' partner Vauban tells Tanner that Dubois is in a body bag and the bullets are his. Tanner walks away and ends his work with the police force, forcing him to escape to the nearest warehouse. Once it's known that Tanner has found a way to stop the gang from selling the stolen cars, he is brought back onto the force and aids in stopping the sale of the cars. After a car chase between Jericho and his men and the Turkish Police, Tanner faces him in a final showdown. Tanner gains the upper hand, taking down Jericho. As Tanner decides he isn't worth killing, Jericho takes this chance to shoot Tanner in the back with a concealed gun.

-The scene shifts to the hospital and shows both Tanner and Jericho unconscious on operating beds, one of them flatlining. It's left unclear which one, but a doctor uses a defibrillator on him
