Top of the Pops

-British music chart TV show
-Broadcast weekly between January 1, 1964-July 30, 2006
-After Dec. 25, 2006, it became a radio program.
-Now hosted by Tony Blackburn
-Each weekly program featured performances from sone of that week's best selling popular artists. On Christmas Day, there was a special, featuring some of the best singles of the year
History
-First premiered on New Year's Day in 1964
-The presenter was Jimmy Savile along with Alan Freeman
-The first show featured, in order:
 1. The Rolling Stones: I Wanna Be Your Man
 2. Dusty Springfield: I Only Want to Be With You
 3. The Dave Clark Five: Glad All Over
 4. The Hollies: Stay
 5. The Swinging Blue Jeans: Hippy Hippy Shake
6 The Beatles: I Want to Hold Your Hand

-The arrival of Ric Blaxill in 1994 signaled a return to presentation from established radio 1 DJs Simon Mayo, Mark Goodier, Nicky Campbell and Bruno Brookes.
-He expanded the use of 'via satellite' concerts, taking the acts out of the studios and setting them against landmark backdrops. As a result, Bon Jovi performed Always from Niagara Falls, Celine Dion performed Think Twice in Miami Beach. He also experimented with celebrities presenting, mostly comedians and pop stars who were not in the charts at the time. The mic held by them was referred to as the "golden mic" and it was held by people like:
 1. Kylie Minogue
 2.Meat Loaf
 3.Chris Eubank
 4.Damon Alban
 5.Harry Hill
 6.Jack Dee
 7.Lulu
 8.Jarvis Cocker
Singles
-Most of the show has very strict rules about which singles could be featured. A song could not appear if it was going down the charts, nor could any song appear on consecutive weeks unless it was #1. There were exceptions however. Such as:
 1. Tin Solider: The Small Faces, 1968
 2. Always Yours: Gary Glitter, 1974
 3. Honey Honey: Sweet Dreams, 1974
 4. Love Shine a Light: Katrina and the Waves, 1997
 5. Let's Work: Mick Jagger, 1987

New Top of the Pops
-On Nov. 28, 2003, the show saw one of it's most radical changes. In a break with the previous format, the show played more up-and-coming tracks ahead of any chart toppers and also featured interviews with the artists. The launch show, live and and hour long, was noted for a performance of Flip Reverse by Blazin' Squad

The Final Countdown
-On June 20, 2006, the show was announcing it would be cancelled. The last show was on July 30, 2006. Edith Bowman co-presented it along with Jimmy Savile. The final day of recording was on July 26, 2006 and featured footage and tributes, including The Rolling Stones, who were the first band to appear on Top of the pops, playing The Last Time, with The Spice Girls, David Bowie, Madonna, Wham! Beyonce, Gnarls Barkley, the Jackson 5, Sonny and Cher, Robbie Williams. The show closed with a final countdown, topped by Shakira and her hit "Hips Don't Lie". The show ended with Jimmy Savile turning off the lights in the empty studio.
